A standard controller career begins with tower control.
The highly dynamic and versatile work involves controlling
aircraft ground and air movements as well as authorizing
maintenance vehicles to use runways and taxiways.
Tower control authorizes runway inspections, friction
measurements and snow removal as well as 30000 local VFR
movements per year. In total tower control handles approximately
90.000 aircraft movements per year. This is a challenge young
controllers can handle best.
Luxembourg Tower controller ratings
- Aerodrome control visual (ADV)
- Aerodrome control instrument (ADI)
- Approach control procedural (APP)
Endorsements
- Ground Control (GMC)
- Air control (AIR)
- Tower control (TWR)
- Ground movement surveillance control (GMS)
- Aerodrome radar control (RAD)
Options
- On the job training instructor (OJTI)
- Assessor (ASS)
- Supervisor (SUP)

After many years in the tower, the controller usually continues his career
in approach control where traffic is less diverse and more predictable than in tower control.
The approach controller exclusively uses surveillance radar
to safely guide 60.000 IFR aircraft movements per year.
The small Luxembourg TMA is a challenge. During peak hours, the approach
controller requires experienced planning skills in three dimensions to get
all inbound flights lined up on the ILS. Besides vectoring IFR traffic,
approach control coordinates outbound and inbound flights with adjacent
control centers.
Luxembourg Approach controller ratings
- Approach control procedural (APP)
- Approach control surveillance (APS)
Endorsements
- Precision approach radar (PAR)
- Surveillance radar approach (SRA)
- Automatic dependent surveillance (ADS)
- Terminal control (TCL)
Options
- On the job training instructor (OJTI)
- Assessor (ASS)
- Supervisor (SUP)
Usually the controller career ends with area control (ACC/UAC).
It is the least stressful position in ATC, however
Luxembourg has no area control due to its airspace limitations.
